Great British Beef Week: Celebrating Local, Quality Beef

By Georgina Knock
25th April 2026

Every April, Great British Beef Week shines a spotlight on one of the UK’s most loved foods – British beef. Running from 23rd to 30th April 2026, the campaign celebrates not just the taste of beef, but the people and places behind it. From farmers and butchers to farm shops and restaurants, it’s a chance to recognise the whole journey from field to fork – and why choosing British matters more than ever.

What is Great British Beef Week?

Great British Beef Week was created by farmers through the Ladies in Beef group and is supported by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). Now in its 16th year, the campaign celebrates:

  • The exceptional taste of British beef
  • The hard work and dedication of farmers
  • The importance of local food supply chains

It’s also a chance to connect consumers with the people who produce their food and encourage support for British farming. Watch the video below from The AG Show as it links up with Jeremy Clarkson’s pub, The Farmer’s Dog, for a chat about Great British Beef Week. They catch up with head butcher Charlotte Kingham, who shares her top tips for picking the perfect steak – plus a bit of behind-the-scenes gossip about what life’s really like at the pub when the cameras aren’t on:

Why Local Matters More Than Ever

A key focus for 2026 is the importance of buying locally sourced beef. From farm shops to independent butchers, local businesses play a vital role in getting high-quality British beef onto our plates. When you buy local, you are:

  • Supporting family farms and rural communities
  • Reducing food miles
  • Getting fresher, more traceable food
  • Backing businesses that prioritise quality and care

Research shows that 71% of consumers believe meat from a butcher is good quality, and millions of shoppers continue to support local meat suppliers each year. (AHDB)

From Farm to Fork: A True Team Effort

British beef doesn’t just come from farms – it’s part of a wider network of people working together.

From the farmer raising livestock, to the butcher preparing cuts, to the farm shop selling it locally, every step matters.

As the campaign highlights, it’s about:

“Championing our trusted local supply chains… family farms, farm shops and butchers that work together to deliver top-quality British beef.” (AHDB)

This connection between producer and consumer is what makes British beef so special. Below is another video from this year’s campaign explaining why celebrating this week is so important:

High Standards You Can Trust

British beef is produced to some of the highest welfare and environmental standards in the world (National Farmers’ Union). Many farms use grass-based systems, working with nature to maintain healthy soils, support wildlife, and produce high-quality meat. This means when you choose British beef, you’re choosing:

  • Carefully raised livestock
  • Sustainable farming practices
  • Food you can feel confident about

A Week to Celebrate British Farming

Great British Beef Week is more than just a campaign – it’s a celebration of British food, farming and community! So whether you’re cooking a roast, firing up the BBQ, or picking up a steak from your local butcher, take a moment to appreciate the journey behind it. Because great British beef isn’t just delicious – it tells a story of care, tradition and the people who make it possible.
