Each month we will profile the foods that are seasonal in the UK and we are kick starting with beautiful June. We have become used to buying the same food all year round in supermarkets, but it is often best to wait until something is in season to experience it at its best. Summer is a brilliant time for seasonal food, when much of the available fruit to buy will taste delicious. But what is seasonal in the UK this month?
Strawberries
June of course means tennis at Wimbledon which is synonymous with the humble strawberry. It is the summer months when this beautiful red berry comes into its own and tastes delicious, with or without cream.
Raspberries
Raspberries are also available this month. Have you considered freezing raspberries when they are in season to enjoy them at a later stage?
Tomatoes
Tomatoes in all their colours and varieties start to be available now and if you are growing your own you will know that they are particularly delicious. Have you tried growing your own fruit and vegetables before? You don’t need a lot of space and can grow a lot of food in a simple container.
Courgettes
If you have ever tried to grow courgettes you will know that they are prolific and a courgette plant will produce plenty of food. They are also a very versatile vegetable in the kitchen and can be used for anything from pasta salads to cakes.
